Filing an income tax return in Bangladesh involves registering on the NBR portal, classifying gross income heads under the Income Tax Act 2023, calculating allowable exemptions and rebates, and submitting under the Universal Self-Assessment scheme (Section 180). Successful submission generates an immediate official acknowledgment and PSR certificate.
Statutory Note: Under Universal Self-Assessment (Section 180), your return is treated as assessed upon submission, provided all mandatory schedules and tax payable payments are attached.
Step 1: Portal Registration and Account Verification
Taxpayers can file electronically via the NBR e-tax portal (etaxnbr.gov.bd) or through certified tax practitioners. Online submission requires your 12-digit e-TIN and an NID-biometrically registered mobile number.
- Visit the NBR e-return platform and initiate taxpayer registration.
- Verify your mobile number linked to your NID.
- Set up a secure login credential for ongoing compliance tracking.
Step 2: Income Computation Across Heads
The Income Tax Act 2023 classifies personal income into distinct heads. Each head has specific statutory deduction rules:
- Employment Income (Section 32): Includes basic salary, allowances, bonuses, and perquisites, less allowable standard deductions.
- Rent Income (Section 36): Rental earnings from residential or commercial premises, minus statutory repairs and maintenance allowances.
- Agriculture Income (Section 40): Earnings from agricultural cultivation, livestock, and agro-ventures.
- Business Income (Section 45): Revenue from sole proprietorships or professional practices, less verified operational expenses.
- Capital Gains (Section 57): Profits generated from the disposal of capital assets, land, or shares.
- Financial Assets (Section 62): Bank interest, dividend income, and bond returns.
Step 3: Rebate Calculation and Minimum Tax Rules
After calculating gross taxable income and applying slab rates (0% up to BDT 350,000 for general taxpayers), deduct allowable investment tax rebates under Section 78. Ensure the resulting payable is not below the mandatory minimum tax:
- BDT 5,000 for taxpayers located in Dhaka and Chittagong City Corporations.
- BDT 4,000 for taxpayers in other City Corporations.
- BDT 3,000 for taxpayers outside City Corporation areas.
Step 4: Submission and Proof of Return (PSR)
Upon final review, submit the return along with proof of tax payment via e-payment or Treasury Challan. Download your digital submission receipt and Proof of Submission of Return (PSR) immediately.

Important Deadlines and Extension Requests
The statutory deadline for individual taxpayers is known as Tax Day (traditionally 30 November). If you cannot file by Tax Day due to unavoidable circumstances, submit a formal extension application under Section 173 to your Deputy Commissioner of Taxes (DCT) prior to the deadline.
